Heritage Open Days

Member event

Uncover Ipswich’s history, as we throw open the doors of our flagship branch.

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture. This annual event gives members of the public unparalleled access to historic sites across the country, including those not normally open to visitors.

Among those buildings set to be opened up over the weekend of 9 and 10 September 2023 is Mutual House, our flagship branch located on Princes Street in Ipswich. Originally built as Parr’s Bank in 1901, this Grade II listed building was designed by local architect Thomas Cotman. It still boasts many of its original features.

Additional displays new for 2023 will include record keeping from our earliest ledger which we started in December 1849 and still use today. Visitors can also see handwritten passbooks, wartime microfilm and war damage claims. To celebrate the Wolsey 550 project there’s another rare chance to see our earliest Tudor deed beautifully scripted on parchment.

As well as tours of Mutual House, we will be offering guided walks, which for 2023 will focus on buildings in Ipswich that the Society used either as offices or for member meetings.
