Snow Watch: Beast from the East Round Two?

It’s likely we all remember the late snowfall last February and March, the so-called Beast from the East making itself well known in our county. It was during this that we opened our new premises in Woodbridge, with a few hardy souls joining us for a warming hot drink.

It hardly seems a year ago but this week there are news reports of a yellow snow warning, bringing up to 10cm of snowfall to areas of Suffolk. Or, of course, there could well be none at all. Whatever happens it is surely best to be prepared, so to channel our inner Scout here are five top tips that you might find useful this winter:

1. It seems somewhat obvious but if you are heading outside wrap up warm and wear sturdy, waterproof boots. Make sure your footwear has good grip to prevent slips and falls.

2. Keep your mobile phone charged up and if you have a portable power bank make sure that’s fully loaded too.

3. If you have to drive in snowy conditions, take a “car kit” in case you get stuck out on the road, including warm clothing or blankets, a torch, bottled water and non-perishable snacks as a minimum. You may want to include a snow shovel in case you have to dig yourself out, or come across someone else in trouble. Talking of taking the car, it’s also worth keeping your fuel tank topped up rather than waiting until the fuel light pops up.

4. Insulate any outside pipes or taps to help prevent them freezing and bursting, and keep your home warm to help prevent this happening indoors too.

5. Have your insurance policy to hand and check for cold weather cover (or speak to us to see if we can help with your home and contents)

Finally, during adverse weather conditions please remember to check in on elderly or housebound neighbours, family and friends to see if they need any help.

For the latest snow news in our area tune in to local radio, such as the Mark Murphy Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Suffolk. This will include news on travel conditions, school closures and other useful information.
